HPCSA registration does not transfer to Australia. There is no mutual recognition agreement between South Africa and Australia for podiatry.
Every South African-qualified podiatrist goes through the same route: qualification assessment by ANZPAC, English language proof, an application to the Podiatry Board of Australia administered through AHPRA, a criminal history check, and — separately — a visa.

This is the step most guides don't cover, and it's where South African applicants lose the most time.
Before you touch ANZPAC or AHPRA, request your Certificate of Status (COS) — sometimes called a Certificate of Good Standing — from HPCSA. AHPRA will require this to confirm you're registered and in good standing, and it needs to be recent (issued within roughly six months of use).
The request goes to HPCSA's Legal and Regulatory Affairs department with proof of payment — it is not issued same-day, even in person.
Turnaround is typically around 10 working days once cleared, but can run longer with outstanding compliance queries.
Courier delivery costs roughly R130 within SA or R600 international (about 7–10 days).
If previously voluntarily erased, HPCSA issues a "certificate letter of good standing" instead — same idea, different label.
Keep your HPCSA annual fees fully paid and up to date — an outstanding fee is one of the most common reasons for delay.
Original registration certificate authentication is a separate apostille/DIRCO legalisation process — budget extra time if you need both.
Request your Certificate of Status from HPCSA in the same week you start your ANZPAC application — don't wait for ANZPAC to ask for it.
The accreditation council that decides if your SA degree meets Australian standards.
ANZPAC (the Australian & New Zealand Podiatry Accreditation Council) decides whether your South African podiatry degree and clinical training meet Australian accreditation standards. This is separate from, and happens before, your AHPRA registration application — and it's also the assessment used for the skilled migration points test.
Timing: Allow up to 8 weeks. You'll receive a Statement of Podiatry Qualification — hold onto this for both AHPRA and your visa skills assessment.
If your qualification doesn't fully align, the Board may require an exam — which can only be taken in Australia, not remotely. Get your submission right the first time.
Unless you qualify for an exemption (generally 5+ years of full-time study or recent practice in an English-speaking country — many SA-trained podiatrists do qualify, but don't assume it, confirm it), you'll need one of:
Minimum score of 7 in each of the four components (reading, writing, listening, speaking)
Minimum grade B in each component
Podiatry sits under the same standard AHPRA applies across most of the 16 professions — no lower bar. Book your test early: slots fill up, and a resit adds weeks.
Once ANZPAC has assessed you and your English results are in, you lodge the full application. This is where SA applicants most commonly trip up:
